Springing in to summer – getting rid of that winter weight!
Now that the weather is going to start getting warmer we can all come out from hibernation and start being more active with our pets again!
The benefits of losing that extra bit of weight in our pets include;
· Reduces impact on joints – decreasing the risk of osteoarthritis later in life
· Reduces respiration and cardiac effort – increasing their willingness to play
· Lowers the risk of diabetes and other endocrine diseases
· Increases lifespan
· And reduces the risk of bladder diseases in cats
Losing those extra wobbly bits doesn’t have to be a bore!
Go new places when it comes to walking time with dogs, they will also love all the new smells – mental stimulation is just as beneficial as physical. Choose somewhere with inclines, lots of benches to jump on and off, and steps to get them moving at different angles. Or keep it simple with a good old game of fetch or kicking around a ball. Toys are also a great way to get your cats moving, balls with bells or a wand to wave around to get those arms and legs toned. Cats are also natural hunters; spread their biscuits around in different spots to see if they can ‘hunt’ their meal down.
Swapping out treats for fruits and veg’s such as bananas, apples, carrots and broccoli can help keep the calorie count down as well as a metabolic based nutrition plan.
Our experienced veterinary teams are happy see you and your pets for a weight and nutrition consultation!
